A New Page

Here's the completed animation of After Dark - my final year's project. This update is a bit late sorry!

Uni days are over, now it's time to face the new challenges.

2010 didn't start off so well for me as I was very sick while traveling to Hong Kong and Hokkaido. I really do hate getting sick while traveling. Especially to a place where you don't speak the local's language!

I think if you don't know me personally and read this, there must be a huge blank page in your head dating back to my previous post. Well, to update those who don't know. I've graduated with a degree - to my own surprise, how did I manage those 3 years? No idea! But luckily those days are over. And during holidays I flew to HK, I also stopped by Hokkaido for a week.

Now I'm just busy working...everyday. Gosh, I had no life when I was studying. Now I have no life too lols.

Meh.

I have some personal projects in mind. Still in concept stage at the mo. Stay tune for more!

and new art is coming too!

After Dark Sneak Peak

Here's a few shots of what I'm working on lately. This is a 2d narrative animation based on little red riding hood. (But the story is totally absurd and I love it XD) I'm currently trying to do the animatic, getting the timing right. I was suppose to have that finished 2 weeks ago. But there were too many distractions! (probably this thing called the internet, I think you might have heard of it...it's very distracting.)

Art & Copy

I've been waiting for this film was quite some time now! The wait is almost over :D

ART & COPY is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time -- people who've profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising's "creative revolution" of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for "Just Do It," "I Love NY," "Where's the Beef?," "Got Milk," "Think Different," and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.

SP09 Thoughts

Well, Semipermanent is over, thought I'll blog about it as well since the discussion about it haven't seemed to slow down at all. Maybe because the line of speakers were too amazing. I gotta say it is one of the most inspirational event I have ever been to, even topping SP07 - the only other time I went anyways lol. But I got a lot out of it so $120 was well spent.

There were a huge variety of speakers there, including artists, designers, interactive designers, VFX artists. Incase you were wondering, Cleve Cameron, Alexia Sinclair, Duke Stump, All of Us, Bibliotheque, Weta Digital, James Jean, Studio AKA, Kate Moross, David Carson, 1st Ave Machine, Pentagram were the speakers. Alot of people I know, it was a two day event.

Out of all the speakers I was particularly looking forward to Studio AKA and 1st Ave Machine because I've always been a fan of their work and was looking forward to seeing them share their process which was very cool. I can't believe 1st Ave Machine's Arvind Palep shared same interest and influences as me! He really likes aquatic organisms (I don't know the right word to describe those things lol) and their texture and translucency, which was such a coincidence! because I had planned to model those things 3D but he beat me to it obviously.

I don't think i can write about each speaker, there's just to much to say. But everyone of them had something great and valuable to share. Duke Stump had some very good principles that he talked about and I enjoyed it despite there were no fancy images on the screen and the way he talked was a little hypnotic. Also, seeing the designs by Bibliotheque and Sanky (All of Us) with their interactive designs and installations were probably the highlight for me on the first day.

As for day two speakers, apart from my two favourite studios I mentioned above, I was also looking forward to the legendary David Carson, James Jean and Kate Moross.

If you're a designer you should know David Carson. He is one of the most influential graphic designers of our time. So of course, we were all thrilled to have the chance of meeting him. His presentation was probably the best, in terms of engaging with the audience because he was just SO funny. That was not the David Carson I had imagined I can tell you that. I was expecting someone very serious. But he wasn't, he was so laid back and had a 'enjoy your life, do what you love' kind of attitude. One thing that I remember from him, that he actually said in the film Helvetica, and I am quoting:

"Don't confuse legibility with communication, just because something's legible doesn't mean it communicates. More importantly it doesn't mean it communicates to the right thing. And vice versa"
I wish I recorded his presentation. It was so enjoyable to watch I think I would laugh every time.

For a 23 year old, I think Kate Moross is really impressive. Not just by all the things she's achieved but her attitude and confidence to just go for it. I think out of all the speakers I can relate to her the most because we are both in our 20s and I am in my last year of university so when she talked about her journey since leaving university, it was particularly real to me. So now I'm trying to carry that attitude with me - if you want it, make it happen.

Like she says "Don't look for work, MAKE WORK!"
